From 1978-1981 Jean-Pierre pursued his passion for the Italian Renaissance period, and refined his studies in Florence while painting in the Tuscan countryside.

His works have been displayed in the Cloister of Billettes in Paris and has worked for fashion designer John Galliano of Christian Dior. In 1984 he opened his own atelier, an art gallery in the Marais neighborhood of Paris. Jean-Pierre divides his time between Paris and Panicale, Italy. Realism Robert Bolster & Larry Preston; Artist Reception July 19, 6-8 pm

“Realism: Robert Bolster & Larry Preston” opens July 19 at the Walsingham Gallery. The exhibition will include landscapes, seascapes, and still life paintings from two acclaimed New England realist painters.

Robert Bolster divides his painting practice into two series. He completes many of his New England landscapes and seascapes in a tradition manner, with remarkable adherence to reality and breathtaking attention to detail. His paintings are exquisite illusions of beloved New England scenes. His more recent series of paintings are similar, but with one added element. Bolster begins his “squares” paintings within a grid structure. Meticulously painting each square of the grid as if it were an individual painting, he accentuates the two dimensionality of the picture plane while simultaneously creating a thoroughly convincing depiction of space.

Larry Preston chooses to paint the objects he sees around him, simple, everyday items that are beautiful and all too often overlooked. Depicting a single flower or a piece of fruit, he celebrates the beauty found around us. He paints in oil, on linen or canvas, sketching his subject first in charcoal and turpentine, then applying many semi-transparent oil glazes over the original sketch. The resulting work has great depth and a luminous quality, lending a quiet, introspective quality to his masterful still life scenes.

“Realism” will run from July 19 through August 31, with an opening reception attended by the artists on July 19 from 6 - 8 pm.

Encaustic Painting Demonstration with Jim Inzero

Jim Inzero returns to The Walsingham Gallery with beeswax, pigments, blow torch, and hot iron for his third encaustic painting demonstration, Saturday June 21, from 3 to 7 p.m., during ArtWalk weekend. If you’ve yet to witness the encaustic painting process, Jim Inzero’s demo is the perfect opportunity to learn about this fascinating medium. Encaustic paints consist of wax, resin, and pigments. The paint is heated to a liquid state, and applied in the short window of time before it cools, although once solid, it can still be reheated and reworked at any time. Alongside the demo, Jim Inzero will debut a new series paintings built over maritime charts of Plum Island Sound, Ipswich Bay, Boston, and Cape Cod. Layering loose, textured brushstrokes of translucent wax over these precise, linear charts, he creates an evocative contrast between the two modes of description.

Gestures of Romance

Gestures of Romance

The Walsingham Gallery invites you to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the spirit of Downton Abbey. The glamor and romance of the post-Edwardian era have won the British drama millions of fans across the pond, but long before the series rocketed into popularity, artist James Kubiatowicz was painting his own scenes of dinner jackets and evening gowns.Kubiatowicz’s paintings of the period often depict quiet exchanges of tenderness. A man buckles a woman’s shoe. A lady takes a gentleman’s arm. A waiter arrives with a birthday cake. These small, but significant, moments have a charming sense of serenity and elegance.

This special exhibition, opening February 8 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. will celebrate the little moments that define relationships. In the words of Francois Rabelais, “Gestures, in love, are incomparably more attractive, effective, and valuable than words.” Come meet the artist, and toast to the age of romance. Exhibition to run through February 22.
